Kings Cross St Pancras Underground Station Redevelopment

Location: Kings Cross, London
Client: London Underground
Phil Todd's Role: Head of Technical Capability
Scope: The project has two main purposes: i) congestion relief recommended in the Fennell Report following the Kings Cross Fire of 1987 ii) compatibility and increased capacity required for the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). Design re-commenced in 1999 after a two-year 'hiatus' following the collapse of LCR in 1997. The scope includes 13 new escalators, 7 mobility impaired passenger lifts, two new ticket halls, one (Western Ticket Hall) under the forecourt of St Pancras to serve the Metropolitan and Circle lines and another between St Pancras and Kings Cross (Northern Ticket Hall) to serve the deep tubes. In addition, the existing Tube Ticket Hall is being completely refurbished and enlarged to modern standards. Construction accommodated the full operation of the underground station where the morning peak period sees 55,000 people using the station. This was forecast to grow to 82,000 with the advent of the CTRL.
